Kotor, one of the most beautiful cities in Montenegro, is renowned for its rich history and captivating architecture that dates back to the medieval period. Nestled between the Adriatic Sea and steep mountains, this city is listed as a UNESCO World Heritage site. As such, Kotor requires special attention in any construction project, particularly when adapting existing structures within the Old Town. Recently, we faced a challenging yet inspiring task—the adaptation of one of NLB’s bank branches in Kotor. The goal was to ensure that the new space met all the modern functional needs of the bank while simultaneously preserving the authenticity of the building in which it is housed.
The branch is located in the heart of the Old Town. From the very beginning, it was clear that the adaptation would be complex, not only because of the logistical challenges of working within the Old Town, which operates under its own specific rules, but also because of the need to bring the architect’s and investor’s vision to life through the execution of the work.
It was crucial to adapt the building’s infrastructure to modern needs. Electrical installations, internet networks, security systems—all of these had to be discreetly integrated without compromising the appearance of the building. The materials used, particularly the selection of façade joinery, had to meet the standards of modern construction while ensuring that the authentic look of the Square of Arms was preserved. The old stone walls were cleaned and restored, with careful attention to maintaining their authentic appearance.
At the beginning of July, the branch was ready to welcome clients, and we look back on this project with great satisfaction, especially proud that our engineering and craftsmanship have left a lasting mark in one of the most beautiful cities in Montenegro.
